“So it’s a movie about a guy who gets his hand stuck under a rock for five days? Sure, I’ll get right on that. Once I finish watching this riveting documentary about paint drying.”
As that freaky baby scene in Trainspotting proves, Danny Boyle is a master at creating a terrifying, claustrophobic atmosphere. I could barely watch the first fifteen or so minutes of 127 Hours – my hands clenched over my mouth, waiting for The Accident to happen. Once it did, Boyle had me hooked and never let go.
James Franco carries this film single-handedly, creating a likeable three-dimensional character. He traves the entire emotional spectrum, going from shock to frustration to despair, and finally to sheer pig-headed determination. I for one will never forget that scene when he hits the nerve. Agonising.
I’m still not sure if I could cut off my own arm. But after watching this – damn, I know it would take some cahunas.
Check back in tomorrow for #8, winner of the “That Oscar-Bait Drama that Everyone’s only going to Remember for that One Hilarious Scene”.
